The Appointment with RE

Mar 12, 2008

In the parking lot of the doctor’s office, before getting out of the car, Dave lead us in prayer because, ultimately, we know that this situation is not in our hands and not in Dr. L’s hands, but in the very capable hands of our Heavenly Father. With this mindset, we entered the doctor’s office.

It is always nice to find a doctor who takes his time with his patients. That describes Dr. L. He came in and introduced himself and then asked us both a ton of questions. We were a step ahead of the game by having already had my blood work done and the semen analysis.

I asked about the progesterone and he asked me where I was in my cycle when the blood work was done. When I told him I was a couple days before ovulation he told me at that time in my cycle progesterone levels should be low because progesterone is the hormone released after ovulation. He didn’t seem to concerned about this and has ordered blood work to be done this cycle after ovulation.

The nurse at Dr. R’s office had mentioned polysistic ovaries and wanted to do an ultrasound to take a look at my ovaries to see if they looked polysistic. The ultrasound results came back normal. So today when Dr. L mentioned that I could possibly have polysistic ovaries, I was a little surprised. When I told him about the normal ultrasound results he said I have 2 of the 3 main symptoms of polysistic ovaries. I have very high testosterone levels. Also, even though I have normal regular cycles, I do every so often have the cycle that is over 35 days. He said this is a big indicator of polysistic ovaries.

When he looked at Dave’s semen analysis results, he let us know that many factors can affect the results of a semen analysis. For this reason, he requires his patients to have more than one. So Dave will have to have another one of those. He said the results of the second test may show different results than the first or it could remain the same.

Interesting info…

Dr. L order me to have a glucose test (like the one pregnant women have to have). I will go next week to have that done. Tomorrow I am to go have an ultrasound and physical at 2pm. And Dave has to have another semen analysis done. When all this is done and all results are in, we will schedule another appointment with Dr. L to get a diagnosis and discuss the next steps.
