Setting our hearts on pilgrimage
Apr 22, 2008
Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage. Psalm 84:5
Have you ever run across this verse? Before last Wednesday, reading this verse wouldn’t have meant much to me. Last Wednesday morning, I joined a Bible study at Angele’s church. The group is going through “Stepping Up, A Journey through the Psalms of Accent” by Beth Moore. During the Introductory Session Beth Moore really shed some light on this verse for me.
What is pilgrimage and what does it mean to set your heart on pilgrimage? Pilgrims are on a journey. They are not staying where they are. They are passing through. Beth compared this to our lives. We are pilgrims too! We are on a journey and whatever our circumstances are today, we can rest assured we are on a journey. We are not stuck in these circumstances (although many days it might seem that way). We are passing through these circumstances. That is pilgrimage. When we focus on pilgrimage and not our circumstances we have set our hearts on pilgrimage. Setting my heart on pilgrimage is what is going to get me through tomorrow. My Granddaddy Cowsert used to always say, “This too shall pass.” There is wisdom in that.
Tomorrow is a day I’ve dreaded all my life. Infertility has always been one of my biggest fears in life. It’s a bear I’ve always run from. It’s thoughts that have haunted me all my life really. But now here I am facing this huge, gigantic, fierce bear and I am not afraid! God is going to receive the glory here and I stand in anticipation, not fear, waiting to see what God is going to do next!
