Peter Walks on Water to Jesus
Jun 24, 2008
One of the blogs I read is a blog about a 5-month-old baby boy named Ethan. Ethan has leukemia and is currently undergoing chemo. Hopefully, very soon, a bone marrow transplant will be done. As you can imagine, his parents are going through a huge storm at this point in their life. (This blog is linked to mine on the right hand side of this page.)
Ethan’s mom, Kasey, recently wrote on her blog about the story in the Bible about Peter walking on water. As I read what she wrote I began to see the story in a new light.
Peter says, “Lord if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” So when Jesus called out to Peter to “Come!”, Peter walked out on the water towards Jesus. He stepped out on faith, with his eyes on Jesus but then the winds picked up and Peter became afraid. It was then, and only then, that Peter began to sink.
God has called me to the road of infertility saying, “Come, Elaine!”. I’ve stepped out on faith but the winds (frustrations) sometimes get so intense and I become afraid and sink.
Kasey made a good point. Many times this story has been used to teach what happens with a lack of faith. But I agree with Kasey in that this story paints a very vivid picture as to what fear and doubt does to our faith in Jesus.
Through Peter’s example we can learn that life really is living moment by moment trusting God even when the waves are huge and crashing in on us. Why can we do this?
Because God is faithful from generation to generation.
