The Lord will fight for you … Exodus 14:14
Dec 02, 2008
It is no secret that prayer has played a vital role throughout this journey.
I am confident that it was the power of prayer that held me up through three failed IUIs.
And I am confident that it is prayer that is going to make all the difference somehow, someway during December's cycle of doing nothing fertility related.
Choosing to do absolutely nothing fertility related this month has been hard. I catch myself thinking about what I've thought about constantly for the past 15 months ... When will I be fertile this month? ... and instead, I move my mind into an attitude of prayer.
Yesterday, Angele called me and shared with me a verse in Exodus that God has burdened her heart to pray for me. When I read the verse, I knew that was exactly what God is saying to me this month.
The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14
This verse is centered around the story in the Bible found in Exodus 14 about God parting the Red Sea.
The story begins with Pharaoh letting the Israelites go from their captivity as slaves to the Egyptians and God leading them around by the desert road towards the Red Sea. The Israelites were armed for battle.
God told Moses to have the Israelites encamp near the Red Sea for a specific purpose. His purpose was so He could receive glory through Pharaoh and his army and the Egyptians would know that He is the Lord!
Now, let's take a look at how all this pans out in the usual amazing way when God is involved ...
When the King of Egypt was told that the Israelites has fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and decided to go after them.
Pharaoh gathered his army, which consisted of 600 of the best chariots, along with all the other chariots of Egypt. Then the Egyptians pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea.
When the Israelites saw Pharaoh and his gigantic army, they were terrified and cried out to the Lord and Moses, the man God had appointed to lead them.
The Israelites start saying all these crazy things to Moses that are, quite simply, a result of their fear and lack of trust and faith in God. They ask Moses if he has brought them to the desert to die because there were no graves in Egypt! They question whether Moses bringing them out of Egypt was the right thing to do. And they tell Moses that it would have been better to just stay in Egypt as slaves to the Egyptians than to die in the desert!
Moses answers the people with an undeniable faith in his Lord. He says, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."
What powerful words for the Israelites when they were in the midst of a panic attack with their focus strictly on their present circumstances with no consideration taken to the fact that God is in control and has a mighty plan!
I am just like the Israelites! Right now infertility is my battle. I have been in that exact same place the Israelites were. Fear. Panic. Trying to do something, anything to fix it.
And then the Israelites are told by Moses to do nothing because the Lord will fight for them! And God has told me to, at this time and for this cycle, do nothing and let Him fight infertility for me.
It's very hard. We live in a "do" society. We are always doing something. If something breaks, we fix it, or go buy a new one. We don't just stand still.
But here I stand ... still as a statue ... praying for a miracle.
The Israelites witnessed a miracle right before their very eyes ...
The Lord tells Moses of His Plan for him to raise his staff and stretch out his hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. The Lord said that the Egyptians will know that He is the Lord when He gains glory through Pharaoh's army.
As Moses stretches out his hand over the sea, the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground with a wall of water on their right and on their left!
The Egyptians pursued them and all Pharaoh's horses, chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea. The Lord made the wheels of their chariots come off and caused mass confusion.
Just as the Lord had planned from the beginning, the Egyptians proclaimed, "Let's get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt."
Then the Lord told Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots. Scripture says the Egyptians tried to flee but were swept up in the waters. Not one of them survived.
That day, the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians. And they had done nothing but stand back and let God fight their battle for them. All for the ultimate glory of God.
I don't know how my story will end. And really, God hasn't called me to figure out what He is up to. Trying to figure out what God is doing this month is not where my focus needs to be.
God has, for a purpose we may or may not know at the end of this month, called me to lay down my weapons of defense in this battle of infertility and let Him fight for me.
Either way, a miracle awaits.
