I was adopted too
Sep 16, 2009
Today, Little Bug is 16 weeks old. It is hard to believe that she is approaching 4 months old.
It is hard to believe that just six months ago, we were in the thick of infertility treatments still, clueless as to the miracle God was just about ready to perform.
It was 6 months ago that my mother’s cousin stopped me outside the church that the family had gathered at for the funeral of my great-aunt, and told me, “I don’t know if you’ve ever considered adoption, but if you do, give yourself four months and you will love that baby as if you had given birth to him or her yourself.”
Those were words I needed to hear. You see, we were waiting to find out if God had chosen to do a miracle with The Long Ranger from my IVF cycle turned IUI cycle.
Barely a week passed from that conversation with my mother’s cousin and we learned The Lone Ranger was history.
About a week after that, we turned in our adoption paperwork and learned of a little girl due to be born in June. We were told she could be our daughter if we wanted a baby in less than 2 months!
Through the miracle of adoption, Little Bug became our daughter.
I am reminded today of another adoption that occurred long ago.
It was the adoption of me into the family of God. In fact, anyone who has chosen to put their trust in the Lord has been adopted.
I was not born into the family of God. I was born a sinner. Separated from God because of sin. In fact, Scripture clearly tells us we were “dead in our transgressions and sins.” (Ephesians 2:1)
But because of God’s great love for me, God made me alive with Christ – it is by grace I have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4)
If not for Christ coming to earth to die for my sins and paving the way for me to be adopted into His family, I would not be living the abundant life He has given me because I am now a child of His.
I look at this adorable little girl, kicking her chucky legs and cooing at me as I write this post and I think about the life she will now have because she has been adopted into our family.
She will have the love of both a mother and a father and the stability of a Christian home, both of which would not have been given to her had she stayed in the family she was born in to.
Thinking of that makes me become very aware of the fact that God has done the same with all people who choose to put their trust and faith in Him. He has given us abundant life that we otherwise would not be able to have.
It makes me stand in awe of a God who could orchestrate something so miraculous as the adoption of Little Bug.
And it makes me respect the woman who found out she was pregnant but knew she could not mother this child and put in that phone call in to the agency.
No matter what angle you look at adoption, it is one of life’s most beautiful phenomenons. It is a clear, direct picture of what God has done for everyone who puts their faith in Him.
