I desire to be a “Mary”

Mar 11, 2010

I just read a story in the Bible about Mary and Martha. (Luke 10:38-42)

Jesus had come to Martha’s home to visit. Mary came and sat at Jesus' feet and listened to Him talk. Martha, on the other hand, was busy bustling around the house taking care of preparations that had to be made.

Martha comes to Jesus and asks, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

Jesus replied by saying, “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

What a great reminder!

It is so easy (especially in this day and age) to get caught up in the busyness of life and forget what is really important.

Mary chose to put chores and her other responsibilities aside and sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to Him talk. The chores could wait. Jesus wouldn’t be there talking for long.

This is important for me to remember as I am raising Little Bug. She won’t be her cute little 9 month self for long. There is only so much time that I have to enjoy her as a crawling baby. When she is awake I try to make sure my focus is teaching and playing with her. Chores can wait until she is napping.

That is not to say that I don’t do any chores while Little Bug is awake because I do. I feel it is important for her to see me in my role as housewife so she can even now at this young age begin to learn how to manage a home. After all, life is not all fun and games; life does involve work.  So on Monday mornings she “helps” me clean the kitchen counters and on Fridays she “helps” me do the laundry (which is really quite interesting and fun! :) ) I attempted to allow her to “help” me clean the bathrooms one day last week but that was a total disaster! I decided bathroom cleaning will have to happen during naptimes only.

I think I’ve let it be known on this blog before that I am a clean freak (and having a child now has not changed that!) but I want to be ever conscience of making sure my priorities are right so that I don’t look back one day and see that I missed out on what is now one of the most important responsibilities I have – raising my precious daughter to love and obey the Lord.
