84 years and counting

May 05, 2010

My Grandpa is an amazing man. He is 84 years old but you’d never know it.

He is still so full of life and even at 84 years old is still serving the Lord with his whole heart.

He has been a widower now for almost 14 years. He and Grandma spent 49 years together as husband and wife. They had a very special relationship which I greatly admired.

In the words of Grandpa he said (in reference to Grandma’s death), “I’m over that, you know. I haven’t been to her grave since I don’t know when.”

It’s not because Grandpa doesn’t miss Grandma or has since forgotten her.

It’s simply because he knows where Grandma is.

And he knows one day he will see her again.

Until that time, he still has life to live!

And his life certainly didn’t end on October 29, 1996, when Grandma died.

He mourned and then he picked up the pieces to continue the work the Lord had for him here on this earth.

That work included being a chaplin on cruise ships for many years. When he felt he should “retire” from that, he got really involved with the international ministry at his church. He has been an instrumental influence in many internationals finding their way to Christ.

He has lived 84 years with his life committed to Christ. He raised three fine sons (one of them is my daddy) and has four granddaughters and two grandsons.

And now he even has a little great-granddaughter who calls him “Grandpa G”!

I have to show the picture that was taken right before the one above… DSCN3027

(Apparently Little Bug decided she wanted her Mommy to hold her.)

Grandpa wanted us to go to Wal-Mart and get some flowers to make an arrangement at Grandma’s grave. DSCN3092 I so wish my Grandma could have met Little Bug.

It is hard to believe Grandma’s been gone almost as long as I knew her.

I am thankful for the legacy she leaves behind. And I am thankful for all these years (and counting!) that I’ve had with my Grandpa.
