Haiti: Reflections once home

Jul 24, 2012

Dave and I couldn’t stop talking about Haiti once he arrived home!

Dave’s life and perspective is truly changed. That is what happens when you go on a mission trip to a 3rd world country.

You go to minister to the hearts and lives of the people you come into contact with, but yet, you end up leaving feeling like they gave you more than you could ever give them.

As Dave has told me story upon story about his week in Haiti ministering and spreading the good news of Jesus Christ to a people who so desperately need hope, it reminded me just how blessed we are as American and how we take the convenience of clean water, garbage systems, houses and plenty of food for granted every single day.

It’s been nearly five years since I walked among a people of great poverty and I, too, had forgotten.

Until I started hearing my husband’s stories of a village of people who own one pair of clothing, have homes made of sheet metal or tents, have a shortage of food and end up eating dirt, and do not have the luxury of fresh, clean water that is pumped into their home for drinking, cleaning and cooking purposes.

It is just eye-opening and life-changing to remove yourself from the comforts of “home” and step into a foreign land where the poorest of the poor in America would be considered rich.

Dave learned so much about His God and himself on this trip. He boldly spoke up and told people about Jesus and the Hope He had to offer them. Dave said when speaking to the people about Jesus many were resistant at first, but after listening to what the team had to say as they shared their personal stories of how Jesus had changed their lives and then as the Gospel was presented to them, many of them saw their need for a Savior and would pray right then and there with a team member, surrendering their lives to Christ.

Dave said you could literally see the change in them when looking in their eyes and it was an incredible sight to see.

I’m trying to convince him to write a “guest post” for my blog because he has a story to tell about how God changed his heart about the birth mothers of our daughters.

Incredible story.
