Weather
Mar 11, 2013
The first day of our Weather week was a very rainy day! I told Little Bug she could go out and play in the rain (since there was no lightening) and she could not wait to get out there with her umbrella and rain boots!
After that, we came inside and got warmed up and started on some of our Weather activities.
Little Bug categorized things by Cold/Hot.
During Weather Week Little Bug kept track of the weather daily by completing this Weather Graph. On this rainy day, she colored in one rectangle in the “rainy” column.
It was very fitting that our letter this week was “R”. R is for rain!
Little Bug did Lightening Letter Match. She did the entire alphabet in one sitting! She told me, “I love doing this, Mommy!”.
The next day was a cloudy day so we learned all about clouds!
We read Little Cloud by Eric Carle.
We started with a “Little Cloud” activity. We mixed one part glue, one part shaving cream, Little Bug stirred and she got this mixture that she enjoyed playing with.
She spread it all over the paper to make a cloud.
The mixture made the cloud be 3-D.
We made a “Book of Clouds”.
We learned about three types of clouds and then made each type of cloud using cotton balls. Little Bug was thrilled when she got to use glitter to make the stratus (storm) clouds!
(I just realized I misspelled “gray”. Oops!)
We went outside to see what type of clouds were in the sky that day!
The last day of Weather week was sunny so we did a Sunscreen Experiment!
We talked about the sun and how we have to put sun tan lotion on in the summer or else our skin will burn. (Actually, Little Bug’s skin will just tan beautifully.) But we talked about protecting our skin with sunscreen and then Little Bug rubbed some sunscreen on a piece of black construction paper.
Then we took it outside and put it in the direct sunlight. The paper will fade only where the sunscreen wasn’t protecting the paper. Just like our skin will burn in places we forget to apply sunscreen.
We did a Cotton Ball Cloud experiment.
All we needed was a small bowl of water and a cotton ball. This was a good experiment to learn about clouds and rain and that moisture builds up in clouds and falls back to earth as rain.
Even though this book is way over preschool (and Little Bug’s) level, there were parts that were appropriate so we concentrated on those parts of the book. We read a lot of stories around here and it is important to read non-fiction books as well!
We did some weather spelling. There were three words that did not have the beginning letter. Little Bug used our letter tiles to spell each word: sun, hat and kite.
At the end of Weather week, we had had two sunny days, one cloudy day and two rainy days!
