We started this week by reading our Big Fire Engine book.

This week I did my first ever Learning Time with both girls together! I thought Sweet Pea might enjoy this activity and she did. She was such a big girl sitting there with her sister at the table!

We made a Shape Fire Engine! We talked about the rectangle, square and circle while we made the fire engine. Sweet Pea loved using the glue stick.

Then it was Little Bug’s idea to make a house for the fire engines to go to to put out a fire. So she went in the closet and got out some foam paper and asked me to cut out a house. She also wanted a door and two windows which she glued onto the house.

Next we talked about the letter “F”. We tore yellow, red and orange construction paper into small pieces. I put glue all over the F and then Sweet Pea stuck the pieces on the F! As she picked up the pieces we talked about their color. By the end she was saying “yellow”! And still to this very day if you ask Sweet Pea what color something is, she will say, “yellow”.

Another day we did an experiement with fire. This was an excellent, safe experiment to teach a young child about what puts out a fire. We had so much fun with this! All you need is a candle, matches and a medicine cup with water.

First we lit the candle with the match and then I asked Little Bug what she thought might happen if we put the lid on the candle.

She put the lid on and watched in amazement as the fire went out! She learned fire needs air to burn!

Then we lit the candle again and Little Bug poured the medicine cup of water over the fire. It kind of scared her when the water hit the fire, but she thought that was very cool that the candle went out. She learned water puts out fires too.

We also talked a lot about how dangerous fire is and that we do not play with matches or get too close to a fire or it will burn us.

We read The Fiery Furnace (The Arch Books). Little Bug has just discovered this series of books and is really enjoying them.

We learned about firefighters and what they use to put out a fire and stay safe.
