The Doorbell Rang {Letter Cc, Creation, Cooking, Division}
Mar 26, 2014
{Books We Read}
Our first Ready-Made Preschool book in February was The Doorbell Rang. This is a book we already had because it is such an educational and adorable story! There are 12 cookies that have been baked and at the beginning of the story there are just two children to eat them so that means each child got 6 cookies. But then the doorbell rang and two friends came over so there were four children sharing 12 cookies! More and more children ring the doorbell until there are 12 children and 12 cookies. The doorbell rings one more time and it is Grandma who has a tray full of cookies! Such a cute story and such a fun way to introduce the concept of division to a preschooler.
{Letter of the Week}
Our letter of the week was Letter Cc because of the cookie theme and then we also learned about the Creation story in the Bible this week. Little Bug did her usual letter forming activities with shaving cream, play-doh, Do-A-Dot markers, making the Cc page in her ABC Book and the Letter Cc craft from Ready-Made Preschool. She was also very interested in writing the Letter Cc on paper with a marker! She was quite proud of herself for this!
{The Creation Story}
Every day we read a portion of the Creation story from my Bible (we read one day from her Children’s Bible) and then worked on making a Creation Book. Little Bug enjoyed working on this each day.
{Division with Cookies}
On the first day Little Bug got to make (paper) cookies that we were to use to reenact the story as we read it the next three days. She got to use glue, sprinkles and glitter so she was a happy little girl. We talked about what “one dozen” means. The next two days we gathered 12 friends and as we read the story Little Bug would pass out the cookies to everyone. Then I would ask her, “How many cookies do you have?”, “How many friends are there?” and “How many cookies does each friend get?”. So she would see that 12 cookies shared between 4 friends means that each friend gets 3 cookies! This was such a fun way to introduce the concept of division to Little Bug and just another reason why I love Ready-Made Preschool! The children truly are learning through play which is just as it should be for the preschooler!
The last day of this week Little Bug got to make real cookies with Grams! The recipe for cookies in Ready-Made Preschool wasn’t gluten/wheat free, but Grams is always so sweet to find recipes for Little Bug are gluten/wheat free. They made some cookies and Little Bug liked them but my mom did not! Little Bug took the cookies and divided them among family members. There were five people around the table and she had 9 cookies to give. I was very curious to see what she would do with this one! She gave every one 1 cookie and then when she realized she didn’t have enough to give everyone one more cookie, she took one cookie and cut it in half! So then I asked her how many cookies three of us got and she said, “Two.” and then I asked her how many cookies Sis and Grams got and she said, “One and a half.” She is one smart cookie.
{Places We Went}
This wasn’t planned for Cc Week at all – it just happened to coincide – but we went to the Circus this week!! Grandma and Grandpa watched Sweet Pea because the circus started at 11:30 and I knew we would have to skip naptime. Little Bug enjoyed the circus despite freaking out at the beginning because it was too loud. I know she is very sensitive to loud noises and I didn’t even think about it being loud! My mom had cotton balls and ear plugs but she didn’t want any of those. Finally, Uncle just took her out. They were gone for a good half hour and then Dave and I went looking for them. I was expecting to see a still hysterical Little Bug not wanting to come back in. But, no! Uncle had taken her to get a hotdog and they were heading back in the circus. I asked if he had gotten the ear plugs in her ears and he said, “No. I talked to her. She will be fine.” I didn’t believe it, but we headed back in! And…Little Bug was fine!! When it would get too loud for her, she would just cover her ears and that was that. No more freaking out. I still have no clue what Uncle said to her to calm her down and help her think rationally about this, but whatever he said made all the difference in the world and allowed us all to enjoy the circus!
{Science}
The girls put dye in the different glasses of water. We raised the ones on the end and then the girls were able to witness the water creeping through the paper towels and into the lower glass. They saw how the yellow and blue water mixed and made green water! This was a really cool experiment!
