Sweet Pea’s ABC School {Letter Aa}

Jun 05, 2014

Sweet Pea’s Letter of the Week was Letter Aa. She put apples on her Letter A. We sang a song about apples and did an Apple Size Sort. The best way to introduce the concept of big, medium and small to a 2 year old is to tell them to find the Daddy (big), Mommy (medium) and Baby (small) apples! Sweet Pea got that immediately and categorized the apples correctly on the chart.

lettera

We read some awesome A Books including Apple Farmer Annie, Ten Apples Up on Top and The Little Letter A Book. This A is for Alligator craft was just too cute. The girls loved making it.

We pulled out our bin of plastic animals (which is a favorite toy around here) and we did some Math Activities with the toy animals! First I laid 7 sheets of paper on the floor with a shape drawn on each of them. Then I would tell Sweet Pea to pick an animal and then I would tell her what shape to put the animal on.

Next, we got all the animals in a pile and then started categorizing the animals by farm animals, ocean animals, insects, dinosaurs and wild animals. She LOVED this and was so enthusiastic about putting the animals in the correct category. When we began this activity I had no clue whether she would understand how to categorize these animals but she knew exactly where they went and only needed help with a few of the animals. It is amazing how much kids learn simply through reading books and playing!

Another Math Activity we did with the plastic animals was to order them by size. I gathered three animals of different sizes and had Sweet Pea line them up in order of size from biggest to smallest. She knew exactly how to line them up!

The last Math Activity we did was to measure several animals using Unifix cubes. This was the most challenging activity we did for Sweet Pea but it was a great introduction to measurement for her! She understood that some animals were longer than others.

animals
Next week is Letter Zz!
